Synopsis

A group of actors is faced with the confusing proposals of a director, who cut off the rehearsals of a play to repeat a scene with two characters, exchanging roles. The lack of clarity in the direction and economics of the project, added to the director's request for the actors to expose themselves, generates challenging reactions and situations that bring to the table issues such as care, power dynamics, leadership and manipulation.

History of the project

Following an idea by the director of the project, at the beginning of 2022 we started rehearsing, training, researching and developing the script of a feature film that would be shot at the end of the year. As the work expanded significantly, we agreed that we would need more time to shoot the film. But it seemed important to us to produce something in 2022: to harvest the fruits of those months of meetings and research. Thus, we came up with the idea of making a film about a group that investigates in order to create a film. We focused on the details of the bonding experiment involved in any shared creative process. By valuing the process, the process ends up becoming a product - a piece of work. We gathered experiences from what happened during those months together, we transformed the material (we fictionalized) and invented situations; with this, we wrote the script for Fiction. We became fiction, or rather, we acknowledged that, to a large extent, we are already fiction.

More about the film

A group of 10 actors/actresses research and rehearse for a play or a film. The work combines theatrical explorations with relational inquiry, play and meditation. There is an interest not only in the product, but also in what happens on a relational level during the creative process. The director has a particular approach that at times blurs the boundaries between fiction and the personal processes of the cast; time and again, he invites the cast to expose themselves, and this generates reactions and challenging situations that bring to the table issues such as care and power dynamics. Throughout the film, we can see how the creative process and relationships unfold in the course of the meetings; we also see how the events inside the laboratory resonate with what happens to the characters in their daily lives. Relational exploration is an aesthetic exploration, and aesthetic exploration is a relational exploration.

Questions that propel fiction

What is fiction? Why do we make fiction? What is the border between the fiction of the characters and the life of the actors? What happens to the actors in the creation of situations and characters so close to their realities? How do the actors prepare themselves to act? How do we hold space for intimate and challenging themes? What is the limit of artistic exploration? Is it necessary to talk about everything? What is the border between artistic creation and therapeutic work? What happens with the dynamics of power within the creative process? What does it mean to lead? Can the search for honesty be a trap? What is the relationship between aesthetic exploration and relational inquiry? Is relating to one another an aesthetic problem? Is art a relational exploration?

The musical

Part of the acting research has to do with the approach to the musical genre. The film is not a musical, but it insinuates that everyday life is, in itself, something like a hidden musical. The director of this group asks the actors to let go of the narrative logic with which they organize the scenes, to give less importance to situations than to the very fact that we are alive. Why do we give more importance to stories than to breathing and temperatures? Why don't we recognize that every conversation is an excuse to sing together? Why don't we assume that every action is a kind of dance? Musician Juan Ignacio Sueyro composed the original music for the film in collaboration with some of the cast members. We have to sing!
